David Ashford is a poet, cultural historian and publisher. David has three poetry books published by innovative small-press Veer – Xaragmata (2013), Orcs!!! (2015) and Sedition Machines (2017) – and two books on cultural history published by Liverpool University Press and Bloomsbury – London Underground (2013) and Autarchies (2017). The poem that appears in this issue of Poetry Wales is an excerpt from a new collection called John Company, an epic that interrogates the cultural legacy of the British East India Company. The title refers to the famous gambling-match in the Indian epic Mahabharata. The research for this new project was conducted during a writer’s retreat on the isle of Anglesey. David now teaches at the University of Groningen, and is the general editor of the innovative-poetry small-press Contraband Books.
